Tarendis - Estonian herring dish

Salted herring is a frequent guest on our tables: in its pure form or as part of the much-loved salad "Herring under a fur coat", a little less often - forshmak, but perhaps not everyone has tried the Estonian dish tarendis with herring.

It combines salted herring, fresh cucumbers and dill in sour cream jelly perfectly. Try to cook it, this cold appetizer is worth it!

Salted herring - 1 fillet

Sour cream - 350 ml

Fresh cucumber - 1 pc.

Onion - 80-100 g

Fresh dill - 1 bunch

Gelatin - 1.5 tbsp.

Cold water - 100 ml

1. Pour cold boiled water over the gelatin and leave to swell, following the instructions on the package.

2. Cut the onion into medium cubes and pour boiling water over it for a few minutes to remove the bitterness.

3. Wash the herring, rip open the belly and remove the entrails. Clean the fish well from the inside. Cut off the tail and head and cut the carcass into two fillets, remove the skin and remove the vertebrae and rib bones.

4. Cut the herring fillet into small cubes.

5. Cut the cucumber into cubes the same size as the herring.

6. Finely chop the fresh dill.

7. When the gelatin has swelled, place the saucepan on low heat and heat it, stirring, but not allowing it to boil.

8. Place the chopped herring in a deep bowl.

9. Drain the onion in a sieve, then add to the herring.

10. Add the chopped cucumber and dill.

11. Mix all the ingredients.

12. Pour the melted gelatin into the sour cream and mix. Pour the sour cream and gelatin into a salad bowl.

13. Gently mix all the ingredients.

14. Fill small molds or glasses with the prepared mixture and put them in the refrigerator to harden.

15. The Estonian dish Tarendis (tarretis) is ready. Decorate the hardened snack with a sprig of dill and a piece of herring.
